BC Sugar Museum operational records

Series consists of records documenting the operations of the BC Sugar Museum.

The records include guest books, appointment books, 'thank-you' letters, samples of BC Sugar Museum promotional materials, some teaching materials for student groups, samples of forms for use in the museum and other related materials.

Sugar Research Foundation correspondence

Series contains records created and accumulated by BC Sugar President P.T. Rogers. The records document BC Sugar's participation in the Sugar Research Foundation.

The records consist primarily of correspondence, though there is also a small quantity of other records, such as speeches, memoranda and circulars sent to member companies by the Foundation, and records of Foundation Board meetings.

Laboratory records

Series consists of records documenting the quality control, and production and materials experimental work performed by the laboratory at the BC Sugar refinery and the laboratories of its subsidiary companies.

The records include chemist's reports on production, productivity, and yields; analysis of raw and melted sugar tests; instructions and formulas for various test and experiments, and other related records. The series includes photographs of product analyses, including photo-micrographs of refined sugars from various refineries.

BC Sugar history files

Series consists of records created and aggregated by BC Sugar Museum staff to document the history of BC Sugar and its subsidiaries. Records come from within BC Sugar, outside sources, and content created by Museum staff. The series was created specifically to document significant events in the history of the company.

The series contains a mix of original records, handwritten notes, and photocopies collected by the BC Sugar Museum. Materials in this series vary widely and include correspondence, newspaper clippings, collected stories about BC Sugar, contracts, and various other materials thought to be useful by BC Sugar Museum staff.

Executive subject files

Series documents the activities of two BC Sugar preidents, P.T. Rogers and E.T. Rogers, and relate to a wide range of the Company's activities.

The records document visits to foreign sugar factories, materials gathered about foreign factories they visited, design and maintenance of plant and equipment at the Vancouver refinery, refinery quality control issues, product development, development of refinery processes, human resources management at the refinery, production statistics, and issues at BC Sugar's subsidiary companies.

The records include correspondence, research reports, production reports, union records, equipment information, and various materials of interest and use to company's president in the management of the company, organised by subject.

Original file codes have been retained although no index was donated with the records.

Knight Sugar Company records

Series consists of records documenting the operations of the Knight Sugar Company, the first sugar beet refinery operations in Western Canada. The series includes operational records of the Raymond, Alberta sugar beet refinery, mostly related to the shipment of sugar, payments to employees and suppliers, and equipment maintenance. A small volume of the records relate to the ranching and agricultural operations of the company.

The records largely consist of correspondence and invoices, organised by the BC Sugar Museum into subject files. The series also includes cheque registers, receipt books, shipping books, and equipment reports.

Series consists of records documenting the design and publication of the BC Sugar employee newsletter, The Sugar Scoop.

The series consists of a small number of page mock-ups for newsletter pages depicting staff at work and social events, as well as a complete run of the published newsletter.

Cookbooks

Series consists of records documenting the promotion of sugar and sugar products for home use.

The records are small cookbooks and pamphlets of recipes promoting the use of sugar in domestic cooking, collected by the BC Sugar Museum. Some of the items are BC Sugar publications.

Atlantic Sugar Company records

Series consists of records documenting the construction of a sugar refinery in Saint John, New Brunswick. The records consist primarily of contract files, which include specifications, drawings, contracts and correspondence with suppliers and contractors, as well as related photographs. The series also contains a small quantity of material collected by the BC Sugar Museum about Atlantic Sugar operations.

Series consists of the remaining records of the Knight Watson Ranching Company. The records document ranching operations and shipping sheep and cattle to various markets, and acquisition of supplies and equipment.

The records include correspondence, cheques, invoices, and shipping records.

Series consists of records documenting the creation and operations of the Manitoba Sugar Company.

The series consists of records documenting the creation of the company, such as initial trademark applications and correspondence of the company's founder documenting his efforts to get the refinery built and operational; records documenting the governance of the company, including minutes of Board of Directors' and shareholders' meetings, and by-laws; and records documenting the operations of the company, such as publications regarding sugar beet growing, and statistics and reports on agricultural operations, sales, purchases, and factory production.

Canadian Sugar Factories operational records

Series consists of records documenting the creation of Canadian Sugar Factories and its operations both under the ownership of the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company and, beginning in 1931, under the ownership of The British Columbia Sugar Refining Company, Limited.

Records in the series include a wide variety of operational records, including operating review reports, human resources records, railway and other leases and contracts, companies registration records, correspondence and subject files, photographs, maps associated with the various refineries, and site plans of the Raymond refinery.

Series consists of records documenting the operations of the Ozama plantation and factory, its relationships with its parent company and the Dominican government, and the eventual sale of the company.

Refinery foreman's records

Series documents the day-to-day production operations of the British Columbia Sugar Refining Company refinery in Vancouver. The records document production inventories and management of refinery staff.

The records consist of small notebooks where someone in a supervisory position (assumed to be the refinery foreman) recorded information on various operations, such as: available stocks of sugar products and production supplies, shipments, and contributions of refinery employees to the War Fund.

Vice-President’s office records

Series consists of records that were identified as being in the custody of the BC Sugar Vice-President's office at the time that they were removed by the staff of the BC Sugar Museum. The records primarily document the oversight of BC Sugar's subsidiary companies. The records may have been retained by various Vice-Presidents from previous roles.

The records include correspondence, harvest and production reports, agricultural production reports, and reference material.

Series consists of records documenting BC Sugar's relationship with Western Plywood, in which BC Sugar was one of the principal investors.

The records primarily are financial statements and asociated financial records of Western Plywood and its subsidiaries. The series also includes audit records, tax records, reports and correspondence.

Collected publications

Series consists of publications collected by BC Sugar or the BC Sugar Museum in support of various operational activities. The main portion of the collection is made up of various sugar industry publications from Canada and other countries. The collection also includes publications about the history of the sugar industry in Canada and other countries, government reports concerning the sugar industry as well as sugar research serials and publications. The series includes publications of BC Sugar subsidiaries Manitoba Sugar Comapny and Canadian Sugar Factories.

Series consists of records created by BC Sugar and its distribution subsidiaries in Alberta and Saskatchewan, documenting the founding, administration and operations of those two companies.

The records include correspondence, shareholder certificates, tax and companies registration records, financial records, and operating expense reports.

Series consists of records documenting the creation and operations of the BC Sugar Refinery, Limited, particularly the company's shareholder relations and administration of shareholding.

The series contains ledgers of the Compnay's early Board meeting minutes, annual general meeting and special meeting minutes. The majority of records in the series are related to shareholders, including: shareholder correspondence files, shareholder lists, and dividend payment records.

BC Sugar Museum moving image materials

Series consists of moving image materials collected by the BC Sugar Museum. Some of the materials were used for BC Sugar Museum programming for school groups or tours. Some of the material was originally created by BC Sugar in its efforts to promote the company's products and sugar use in general.

Agricultural research records

Series consists of records documenting research into increasing the productivity of sugar beet production and development of new sugar beet varieties conducted by BC Sugar's Agricultural Research Department and researchers at the various subsidiary companies. Research conducted at subsidiaries was regularly reported to BC Sugar's lab in Vancouver.

Records include annual agricultural and agricultural research reports, research notes, correspondence, photographs, contracts with farmers, field records, and an annotated bibliography.

Sugar sales records

Series consists of records which document the promotion of sugar use, and advertising and sales of BC Sugar's products.

Records include early salesmen handbooks, some promotional and nutritional materials about sugar, and grocery magazines. The series also contains records which appear to document administration of the sales department office.

Collected resource material files

Series includes records and photographs collected by the BC Sugar Museum in order to create Museum display cases and for Museum planning and programming.

The series includes originals records from BC Sugar, as well as photographs and research materials. The records include correspondence, sugar machine manuals, contracts and other materials of interest collected by the BC Sugar Museum.

Purchasing records

Series consists of records documenting the acquisition of raw sugar supplies, and processing equipment and supplies by the BC Sugar Purchasing Department, as well as the sale of refining by-products and surplus supplies.

The records include telex and telegraphic cypher books, lists of raw sugar prices, correspondence, notebooks listing suppliers and purchases, a notbook listing sales of surplus and production by-product materials, and equipment catalogues and manuals.

Finance and accounting records

Series consists of records documenting day-to-day accounting and year-end summaries of revenue, expense, and capital transactions; and regular analysis and reporting of the Company's financial position. The series also documents transactions relating to the Company's subsidiaries.

The records include draft, final and audited financial statements; a wide variety of accounting ledgers, such as General Ledgers, Cash Ledgers and Subsidiary Ledgers; ledgers relating to the costs of employee benefits; and various Journals. The series includes both public and private ledgers.

Series consists of textual materials collected by the BC Sugar Museum from the Rogers family but not used in museum displays at the time of donation.

Advertising records

Series consists of records documenting the acquisition of various forms of advertising for BC Sugar products.

The records include samples and photographs of published advertisements, correspondence, cost reports, and related materials.

Museum ephemera collection

Series consists of ephemera collected by the BC Sugar Museum that is not directly related to the operations of BC Sugar or to the Rogers family. Material in the series documents the sugar industry in general and operations of companies that had some relationship to BC Sugar but which were not in the sugar business in some capacity.

The material in the series includes a small volume of business records of the builders McGhie and McLuckie, and later John M. McLuckie operating on his own, acquired by the BC Sugar Museum, as well as a broad range of ephemera material related to the sugar industry in general and museums.

Engineering and maintenance records

Series consists of files documenting the design, acquisition and maintenance of the manufacturing systems at the BC Sugar refinery in Vancouver, as well as facilities at its wholly-owned subsidiaries in Alberta and the Dominican Republic.

The records include vendor catalogues, technical bulletins and manuals for a wide variety of manufacturing and other plant equipment and tools. The records also include maintenance plans and feasibility studies, maintenance account records documenting the costs associated with maintaining equipment in various departments, technical drawings of plant equipment, and maps of the Vancouver refinery site.

The series includes one sub-series documenting production and engineering activities at the BC Sugar subsidiary in the Dominican Republic, the Ozama Sugar Plantation and Factory. The series also includes sub-series which document the construction, upgrading and renovations to the three sugar beet refineries operated by the BC Sugar subsidiary in Alberta, Canadian Sugar Factories.

Series consists of ephemera items collected by the BC Sugar Museum which are from or about the history and operations of BC Sugar, including packing material from BC Sugar products and awards given to the company or its subsidiaries.

John Schreiner records re: The Refiners

Series consists of records gathered and notes created by John Schreiner in the course of researching and writing a book on the history of BC Sugar entitled: The Refiners: A century of BC Sugar.

Series includes early drafts, outlines, and edits of the book chapter by chapter, notes used to write the chapters. The series also includes other research materials collected for potential use in the book, including photographs, and a photograph album.

Secretary's office records

Series consists of files oversight of the subsidiary Canadian Sugar Factories by the Secretary's office at BC Sugar.

The records include agendas of shareholders' meetings, letters patent and other records relating to the original foundation of Canadian Sugar Factories by its original owners, and correspondence of the Secretary and Tresurer regarding the periodic closing of BC Sugar's books in preparation for regular dividend pay-outs.
