Neil Gilchrist fonds

The fonds consists of 65 diaries written by Neil Gilchrist from 1910-1975. Neil was 16 in 1910 and wrote an entry every day until he died in 1975. There are two diaries for the year 1918 and includes time he spent in the army. The entries reflect Neil's personal and business life while living in Vancouver. The first half of the diaries include his will. Most of the latter half include a retrospect of the year. Some diaries include a "forward glance" for the upcoming year. The majority of the diaries, especially the later ones, include his cash accounts and balances.

The fonds also includes correspondence, 1910-1942, and other textual records related to the School of Ophthalmology and Optometry in Los Angeles, as well as a photographs, 1886-1924, showing family, friends, scenes around Vancouver and British Columbia as well as a travel album from around the world.

The collection consists of a genealogy and family history of the McPhater/Patton family, compiled by Neil McPhater, and a burial permit for Arch McPhater, 1892. The genealogy traces members of the McPhater family from ca. 1780. The McPhaters, who emigrated to Canada, changed their name to Patton. Donald Patton owned a ships chandlery in Vancouver around 1890. There are other descendants in the Vancouver area. Ronald Reagan also is included in the genealogy.

Fonds consists of 48 personal diaries of Peter Thorne as well as one sketchbook. Entries document his daily life and his areas of interest including geology, fossils, and astronomy. Portions of entries are written in shorthand (Pitman?) script. Photograph prints are also incorporated into the diaries. Most diaries contain photographs showing views of the West End or downtown Vancouver, as well as shots of geological formations or fossils taken by Thorne either locally or during regular trips to various sites around the British Columbia or Washington State. Besides geological subject matter, photographs also generally show self portraits, family and friends, local landscapes, downtown, Stanley Park and West End streets. Diaries created later in life more predominantly consist of photographs rather than handwritten or typed entries. Each diary volume also includes a small amount of loose material such as postcards, stamps, correspondence, cards, clippings and other ephemera.
