Collector/curator's description reads: “1928, Vancouver. Won Alexander Cumyow (left) and Vancouver Mayor L.D. Taylor at the grand opening of the Chinatown fairgrounds. In Paul Yee's book [Saltwater City], a slightly different version of this photo is accompanied by the caption ‘Opening of the Chinese Playground, 1928, behind the southeast corner of Pender and Carrall Streets. Standing by the stage is Won Alexander Cumyow, and on stage is Mayor L.D. Taylor.’ The banner lists, in Chinese, the schedule/line-up for the opening ceremony: ‘Grand Opening Line-Up; Group gather; Students play army song; unveiling; President speech; Vancouver Mayor Speech; Sing China National Anthem; Take Photo; Student Parade Proclaim 3 times, "Long Live the Republic of China"; Awards/Memorabilia "gold plaque"; Pass out Candies; End of Ceremony.’

Item is an amateur film beginning with footage of a man playing with dogs; wild horses running; Margaret Magoffin driving a car; Sam Magoffin, Margaret and various people and dogs standing on the front stairs of a house; and Sam and three men exiting the S.S. Magoffin & Co. Railway Contractors Tie Department building (possibly in Prince George).
The film also includes footage of Prince Rupert, B.C., including the Prince Rupert Hotel and Sam and Margaret Magoffin on Sixth Avenue with several of the downtown buildings in the background. Also included is footage taken along the waterfront and from aboard the S.S. Prince Rupert, as well as views of the city taken from a high vantage point. Buildings shown in this footage include the fire hall and elevator.
Also contained in the film is footage of a parade in Vancouver taken from a bird’s eye viewpoint. The parade includes footage of mounties on horses, sailors, a pipe band, clowns, animals, and many floats, including floats for Point Grey, the City of Vancouver, the Loyal Order of Moose, Burns Shamrock Brand Products, Vancouver Ice Cream, and a stampede. The film also includes several minutes of footage of a rodeo at Hastings Park, including bronco and bull riding and chuckwagon racing activities. The film also shows Sam and Margaret with other people in front of the Court House and having a picnic on Grouse Mountain. Also included is footage of a military parade by Victory Square, a military review, and a medals ceremony; Mayor L.D. Taylor is shown in attendance at this event.

Item is a panoramic photograph of the Point Grey civic picnic on Bowen Island. Mayor Louis Denison Taylor is seated in the middle of group.
Fonds consists of ten films created by Samuel S. Magoffin in the 1920s and 1930s and two films created by George W. Goold in the 1960s. Subject matter of the Magoffin films includes the earth-moving activities of Magoffin’s company S.S. Magoffin & Co. Limited Railway Contractors during contracts with the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in Prince Rupert, and along the harbour in North Vancouver. Films also include footage of downtown Prince Rupert; family, friends, and social activities; Vancouver area scenery and attractions, including Grouse Mountain, Capilano Suspension Bridge, a parade downtown, a military parade and medals ceremony at Victory Square, and a rodeo at Hastings Park; Vancouver Fire Department vehicles; the Victoria, B.C. inner harbour; a dog show; a trip to Cuba; the 1930 Portland Rose Festival parade; the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles; as well as footage of the Magoffins’ home “Rockhaven,” its construction, and their golden retrievers. Goold family films consist of one film showing a childrens' performance and individuals exiting a church after a christening, and one film containing footage of a family trip to eastern Canada, including a visit to Expo '67 in Montreal, and various tourist attractions in South Dakota and Wyoming.
