Stone sculpture symposium, Vancouver, 1975

Item is a documentary film about the 1975 Stone Sculpture Symposium in Vancouver. The film is a combination of footage from the sculpting event and voice over narration discussing both the symposium itself and the sculpting process. Abstract electronic score by Martin Fossum plays sporadically throughout.

The film begins with footage of the original marble and travertine blocks, and follows the sculpting process to the end, including footage of hand and mechanical chiseling, polishing and grinding, and moving the works to their final positions. Over this footage the narrator discusses the rebirth of stone carving in the 20th century, the history of the symposium, the relationship between the artist, sculpture, and the natural surroundings, and the importance of the final positions to the creative process.

The documentary concludes with footage of each artist and their final work in its completed state and final positioning. Those artists are: Olga Jancic, Yugoslavia; Joan D. Gambioli, Canada; Michael Prentice, France; David Ruben Piqtoukun, Canada; Kiyoshi Takahashi, Japan; Hiromi Akiyama, France; David Marshall, Canada; Adolf Ryszka, Poland; Jiro Sugawara, Italy; Kubach-Wilmsen Team, Germany; and Mathias Hitz, Austria.

The first two shorter advertisements include images of smaller sculptures while a voice over narrator talks about the sculpture symposium. The final longer advertisement includes aerial footage and an expanded discussion of Vancouver history and sculpture in addition to the same images of smaller sculptures and exposition about the sculpture symposium.

Pool, view, horse and house

Item is an amateur film showing Margaret Magoffin and another lady coming down some stairs to the edge of the swimming pool and standing by the ocean at the Magoffin’s residence Rockhaven at 3612 Marine Drive, West Vancouver. A man is shown casting a line into the ocean several times, followed by Sam Magoffin and another man swimming in the pool. The film then cuts to footage of a desert-like area, people at a pool, possibly in California or Mexico, and horse races, likely at the same location. This is followed by footage likely taken at Rockhaven showing a golden retriever in the yard and swimming in the ocean, a campfire, and views of the house, garden and the Magoffin’s dogs.

We drivers (part 2)

Item is a film containing part 2 of We Drivers. Film contains footage of North Vancouver, a picnic at Horseshoe Bay, Howe Sound, road from Marine Drive to Grouse Mountain, Grouse Mountain highway and Chalet, the gate to Grouse Mountain; the view from Grouse Mountain, hiking around Grouse Mountain, ferry from North Vancouver to downtown Vancouver, the Vancouver skyline from the Burrard Inlet, a band stand, horse racing at Hastings Park and speed boat racing at Harrison Lake. Produced for Trimble Service Garage.

Garden, Rockhaven construction, Speedwell Pluto, swimming

Item is an amateur film which captures shots of Margaret Magoffin among unidentified others walking through a large garden, including shots of flowers, water features, arches, peacocks, and pigeons. This is followed by footage of a group of men and women (including Sam and Margaret Magoffin) swimming and lounging in an outdoor swimming pool.

Also contained in the film is what appears to be footage of the development of the Magoffin's "Rockhaven" home at 3612 Marine Drive in West Vancouver (likely around 1929); along with shots of the property's vantage point of the Burrard Inlet, footage of laborers digging earth and forming stone retaining walls is captured. This is followed by shots of unfinished foundations of one of Rockhaven's structures and a steam shovel excavator.

Also contained in the film are shots of Rockhaven after completion: footage of flowers growing around the grounds are captured, along with the newly completed retaining wall above the large outdoor pool. This is followed by more shots of flowers interspersed with several shots of a Golden Retriever believed to be the famed Speedwell Pluto; shots of the waves against the property's shore; two Golden Retrievers in the grass yard by the water; glimpses of the Rockhaven house's exterior; and Margaret's mother, Mrs. Boalt, standing by the house.

The film closes with shots of a group posing for the camera, including Sam Magoffin, Margaret Magoffin, Mr. and Mrs. Boalt, a golden retriever, and the group swimming in Rockhaven's outdoor swimming pool.

The film then cuts to footage of a sign reading “Multnomah” and then to a street scene in an unidentified city showing cars and people and a group of young boys looking up at the camera. Also included is footage of three men standing near some bunkhouses in a desert-like environment, perhaps near Magoffin’s Lyon Creek project, as well as some track and the outside of a tunnel and equipment.
