For Twenty Cents a Day

Item is a documentary film documenting work shortages during the Depression of the 1930s and the attempts to deal with the unemployed, in particular young men. The film discusses the establishment of relief camps and projects, where men were paid twenty cents per day; the founding of organizations such as the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), Workers' Unity League, and Relief Camp Workers' Union; general unionization and protest of the unemployed, including the On To Ottawa Trek, Regina Riot, sit-in strike from May to June 1938 at the Vancouver Main Post Office, Vancouver Art Gallery and Hotel Georgia, and the resulting Bloody Sunday of June 19. Archival footage and photographs complement the narration. The film includes interviews with Syd Thompson, a participant in the On To Ottawa Trek and later a leader of the IWA Vancouver local, Steve Brodie, leader of the Vancouver sit-in, and poet Dorothy Livesay.

Protest

Item is a documentary film documenting a street demonstration in Vancouver in July 1981 protesting the screening of the sexually explicit feature film Caligula in a conventional movie house (not a pornographic establishment). The film includes footage of a crowd of several dozen adults and children carrying placards and picketing the Towne Cinema (919 Granville Street) where Caligula was being shown, a spokesperson for the organization United Citizens for Integrity explaining their reasons for protest, and a number of heated debates on the street between protestors and bystanders/theatre-goers. Film also includes some general views of Granville Street showing the Towne Cinema and nearby buildings.

Hookers on Davie

Item is a videocassette containing a recording of a documentary entitled 'Hookers on Davie'. The film contains footage showing sex workers working in the West End, organizing and protesting. The documentary includes interviews with sex workers and others including Ricky, Joey, Michelle, Michelle's mother, Tiffany, Bev, and members of ASP (Association for the Safety of Prostitutes). Film is shot in the West End, and includes footage from inside the Columbia Inn.

The Names Project

Item is a videocassette containing a short film entitled 'The NAMES Project'. The film discuses the impact of The Names Project, which resulted in the creation of a large scale quilt with the names of people lost to the AIDS epidemic. The film includes footage of Cleve Jones (Executive Director of The NAMES Project) and Mike Smith (General Manager of The NAMES Project) and shots of the quilt on tour in various cities in the United States.

Little Sister's vs. Big Brother

Item is a videocassette containing the documentary entitled "Little Sister's vs/ Big Brother", written and directed by Aerlyn Weissman. The film explores the history and mandate of Little Sister's Bookstore and traces the legal battle and court case against the Canada Border Services Agency. The court case centered around censorship, the labelling of books as 'obscene' by Customs Canada and the denial of their entry into Canada. The film includes footage of and interviews with Jim Deva. Bruce Smythe, Janine Fuller, Julie Stines, John Dixon, Gar Fisher, Patrick Califia-Rice, Joseph Arvay, Irene Faulkner, Sarah Schulma, Felice Newman, Frederique Delacoste, Pierre Berton, Jane Rule, Pat Califia, Bill Richardson, Mark MacDonald and Nadine Strossen. Item is a videocassette containing a documentary entitled 'Faces: GLBT in Vancouver.' The documentary traces the history of LGBTQ life in Vancouver and shows demonstrations, businesses, legal frameworks, community leaders, night life, AIDS/HIV, activism, neighbourhoods and celebrations. The video contains interviews and archival footage of Bill Richardson, Margo Dunn, Ellen Woodsworth, Esther Phillips, Jamie Lee Hamilton, Rob Joyce, Don Hann, Maurice Flood, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Sarah Davidson, Mary-Woo Sims, Heather Kitching, Jim Deva, Svend Robinson, Tim Stevenson, Ted Northe, Gordon Price, Janine Fuller, Gareth Kirby, Angus Praught, Dennis Dahl, Garry Penny, Jane Rule, Nym Hughes, Libby Davies. The archival footage in the film was provided by the CBC. The documentary was produced, directed and edited by Thomas Donovan.
