1958 : A year to remember

Item is a film containing highlights of British Columbia's centennial year in Vancouver. Includes shots of an antique car parade, a tall ship at dock, naval vessels, street decorations in Vancouver, Chinese Freemasons parade (with drill team, dragon dance, etc.), a powwow, horse racing at Exhibition Park, PNE parade, and the last of the region's interurban streetcars. Film also includes footage showing the aftermath of the Second Narrows Bridge collapse.

1991 - Year of the sheep (ram), Chinese New Year - Parade, Vancouver, B.C.

Item is an amateur home movie of the 1991 Chinese New Year’s parade in Vancouver. It includes footage of the parade from East Pender Street outside the Chinese Cultural Centre and from Keefer Street just outside the entrance to the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Gardens. Also included is footage of vendors and tables inside the Chinese Cultural Centre, scenes of families inside the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Gardens, primarily inside the main pavilion, a view of the water and railings, and through the moon doorway.

The parade footage contains a variety of traditional Chinese elements, such as lion dancers, Chinese dragons, firecrackers, flags, dancing, music, and costumes. Some of the identifiable groups in the parade are: Cheerleaders from Steveston Secondary School, Children from J. W. Sexsmith Elementary School, Dancers from Strathcona Chinese Dance Co., the Freddy Fudd[pucker] band, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides of Canada, St. John’s Ambulance Cadets, Tibet Lama Kung-Fu, and the Western Canada Chinese Martial Arts Association.

BC [British Columbia] postcard - The Rockies to the Pacific

Film is a promotional video for the province of British Columbia. Focusing on different sections of the province in turn the video highlights the features and tourist attractions of each. According to the donor this is most likely the original of the final production with sound and image. Chinatown Parade 1960

Item is an amateur film of the Chinatown Parade, likely taken in 1960. The film includes views of Pender Street and spectators lined up along the parade route, and cars and groups participating in the parade, possibly including Miss Chinatown and pageant runner-ups.

Dragon Parade 1958

Item is an amateur film of the 1958 Chinatown Dragon Parade. The film includes views of spectators lined up along the parade route, buildings and signs for businesses along Pender Street, and cars and groups participating in the parade. Footage includes many shots of men in a large dragon costume, the Vancouver Fire Department Band, and the Chinese Freemasons and Chinese Community School floats.

Grey Cup parades

Item is film containing footage of the Grey Cup parades in 1955 and 1958 on Hastings Street. Film shows parade floats, automobiles, Shriners, Miss Grey Cup winners, CFL floats, marching bands, RCMP and cheerleaders.

Parade on Pender Street and dance performances

Item is a film showing a parade on Pender Street with people dancing and walking with banners, as well as a scene with a group posing for photographs. The second part of the film shows dance performances on an indoor stage. Writing on box suggests the performances are by the Strathcona Folk Dance group and a dance group visiting from China.

P.N.E. Parades 50, 51, 52, 53, and 56 - P.N.E. Ground [s] 60 and 61

Item is a film showing P.N.E. parades and the P.N.E. grounds. The film contains footage of parade floats, cheerleaders, marching bands, Mounties and Shriners. The film also shows crowds gathered in downtown Vancouver, and features the surrounding buildings and landmarks, likely on Hastings Street. The film contains candid shots of the P.N.E. grounds including P.N.E. visitors boarding amusement park rides, participating in arcade games, eating at concession stands, looking at attractions and attending the horse races.

Shriners Parade '51

Item is a home movie depicting a Shriner parade. The camera person stands in the crowd while Shriner men march past in regiments and bands or ride on car floats. Hastings Street and the Patricia Hotel are identifiable.

Tourism B.C. Marketplace Progam [Program] - Expo 86

Item is "Marketplace Program" produced for EXPO 86 and Tourism BC. Major exhibition in BC Pavilion for EXPO 86. Multi-screen laser disc interactive display. Laser discs were very new at this time and cost over $2500 each to manufacture. This laser disc was produced to be used with specially designed players that would allow for touch-screen interaction from visitors to the B.C. Pavilion. These machines no longer exist; to get an idea of what options were made available pause the playback to view what the touch-screen displays looked like.
Item includes visual vignettes featuring footage to represent various geographical areas of the province of British Columbia. Theme music plays in the background of the scenes; no dialogue. Brief written descriptions of each area of the province precede each section of footage. At 00:10:23 - 00:10:24 screen shots of all of the various touch screen menu screens appear - to see these please slow down the playback and pause for each. Starting at 00:10:26 the footage plays out that would have been associated and parsed out for the various selected menu choices. At 00:12:08-00:12:11 more screen shots of selections flash by, again slow or pause to view these fully. Starting at 00:12:12 more groupings of clips of British Columbia can be viewed. The16mm release print that the digital child was made from, was struck from the internegative/original negatives, and the optical sound track; it is closest thing to an original in the donation for this production. It is the only record of this movie on film with a soundtrack.

The film features footage of Vancouver and the surrounding area highlighting the activities and attractions available to visitors. The final five minutes of the film features a couple of minutes of archival footage of Vancouver as a way to celebrate and acknowledge its 100 year history.
