Bing Crosby - Philco Radio Time

Part contains a recording of a network broadcast of Bing Crosby's radio show during his October 1948 visit to Vancouver. The sponsor was Philco Radio and Television Corp. and the broadcaster was the American Broadcasting Company. BC Archives created recording by copying Parts 1, 2 and 3 from two original audio discs.

Sunset Memorial broadcast

Part contains excerpts from the CJOR broadcast of Bing Crosby's 1948 visit to Vancouver, reprised on the eve of the cornerstone laying at the Sunset Memorial Centre. Individuals involved include Bing Crosby (speaker) and Dorwin Baird (reporter). BC Archives created recording by copying Parts 1 and 2 from the original audio disc.

Lecture on atomic energy and radiation and interview regarding civil defence

Item is an audio reel containing a recording of a lecture on atomic energy and radiation (00:00-32:23), and a recording of an interview with R.B. [Currie], Director of EMO, regarding civil defence in the event of a nuclear attack (32:24-37:45). The remaining twelve minutes of the recording contain ambient sound of people conversing in a room.

Arrival of film "A Queen is Crowned"

Item is an audio reel containing a recording of a radio broadcast reporting the live arrival of the film "A Queen is Crowned" at Vancouver. The film was a theatrical documentary showing the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, to be shown at both the Vogue and Plaza theatres. Commentator Bob Fortune takes listeners through the arrival of the film at the airport; to the J. Arthur Rank offices for film assembly; then to the Vogue Theatre for beginning of showing.

Black Sunday in Gastown

Item is a recording of a CBC broadcast of the special program "Black Sunday in Gastown," written and produced by Bill Herbert, which describes the events of the Great Vancouver Fire of 13 June, 1886. The program features the following Vancouver senior citizens who remembered the fire and recounted their stories of the great conflagration which consumed most of the young city: Mrs. John MacKee, Mrs. W.M. Drainey, Mrs. Gertrude E. Gao, Mrs. Eliza Jane Beach, Alex M. Matheson. Also features a tribute to all survivors by Vancouver City Archivist Major J. S. Matthews. Blank from 28:30.
