Allscreen - Vancouver - reel #3

Film consists of raw footage of scenes of Vancouver used in the video postcard "Vancouver - The World in a City." Including Vancouver street scenes, the downtown area around Burrard Street, and Georgia Street, the Trade and Convention Centre construction site in Coal Harbour, Coal Harbour, the B.C. Ferries seabus, the Gastown neighbourhood, tourists, the steam clock, First Nations artists carving a totem pole, the undeveloped Expo 86 site, and various views of the city of Vancouver. Item is a copy of a City of Vancouver Engineering Department map showing streets, railways, parks and golf courses. Indicates dedicated and undedicated streets open to traffic, streets open to restricted traffic only, and private roads.

Electric City / Neon Madman - Neon

Item is raw camera footage shot for the never completed film which was tentatively titled "Neon Madman" or "Electric City." Includes night street scenes featuring neon lights on Granville Street and Georgia Street, including: Movieland Arcade, Sam's, the Orpheum, Vogue Theatre, Bowmac and more. Also includes scenes of traffic, and shop windows.

Item is processed footage for the never completed film which was tentatively titled "Neon Madman" or "Electric City." Film has been colour manipulated. Footage includes scenes of downtown Vancouver, neon signs, traffic, pedestrians, and store window displays. Some scenes of Granville Street looking South toward Eatons, footage also shows the 'Bowmac' neon sign and many others.

Everest - Hi8mm transfer

Item is Yaletown Productions Everest September 12, 1991 Hi-8 mm transfer tape one. Contains footage of Kathmandu street scenes, Everest - Climb for Hope team members, markets, street sellers, pedestrians, traffic, dogs and people sleeping, a brief scene at a restaurant. Everest - Climb for Hope team members walking along a road beside a river, past a small settlement, through mud, past an avalanche of rocks, includes shots of more rocks falling off the cliff onto the pathway, team members and Sherpas/porters following the first group through the danger area of falling rocks, team members pass another village and interact with local children, scenes of a river or stream being forged, packs being loaded onto a van, an immigration office on the road, Sherpas carry a large and heavy box up a steep path, Alan, an ex-American world-class gymnast carries the 250 lb box a few meters. Team members and their gear are assembled in a building, locals gather around at the Zhang Mu Hotel, negotiations are made with a translator to hire Sherpas to carry gear, some Chinese [?] officials can be seen, the line-up of those waiting for work hold on to each other to eliminate the ability for anyone to cut in line [?] or jump the queue, shots of the Sherpas with heavy pack walking away from the Zhang Mu Hotel and more negotiations with the translator near the truck where the supplies are being loaded.

Contains footage of Everest - Climb for Hope team members riding in a vehicle enjoying the views, playing hacky-sack in a lobby, a meeting about the plan to get the Everest - Climb for Hope team members and their supplies to base camp, a lightning storm, team members enjoying some snacks in a dining area, Dennis toasts the chefs, everyone enjoys a meal together, scenic view of mountains, a moonrise, a friendly dog, team members riding in the back of a truck up to base camp, shots of an monastery located on the way to base camp, arrival at base camp, scenes of setting up, a group photograph, Ernie [Erwin Sniedzins] gives his farewell to the team and drives away. Yaks move into camp area.

Item is a documentary film documenting Gastown and the VanDusen Botanical Display Garden. Film includes footage taken in Gastown of the Captain John "Gassy Jack" Deighton statue, Hotel Europe, Water Street, the Old Spaghetti Factory, Vancouver Harbour Centre, SS Beaver replica at its moorings, Frisby's Restaurant, Seven Seas Imports, The Coggery, Gaslight Square (131 Water Street), the Gastown Steam Clock. Item is a City Map and White Print Co. street map of Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, North Vancouver and West Vancouver, annotated to show traffic density along major arteries. Various locations along the arteries are marked, but the significance of the markings is unclear. A small key map showing Vancouver in relation to the rest of the lower mainland has also been added to the base map.

London and Trooping the Colours

Item is an amateur film documenting London streets, automobiles, and buses, and Gertrude Spencer visiting a family in their home. The film also documents the ceremony of Trooping the Colour, filmed from the crowd across from Admiralty House (?) in London.

Stanley Park

Item is a documentary film documenting views and tourist attractions at Stanley Park (B.C). Film documents the Brockton Point Lighthouse, the south end of the Lions Gate (First Narrows) Bridge (1932-) with heavy vehicle traffic, the exterior of the Stanley Park Dining Pavilion, the seawall with cyclists, and the totem poles at Brockton Point. The film also contains footage of a float plane, cargo ship, squirrel, and several views of downtown Vancouver.

Tourism B.C. Marketplace Progam [Program] - Expo 86

Item is "Marketplace Program" produced for EXPO 86 and Tourism BC. Major exhibition in BC Pavilion for EXPO 86. Multi-screen laser disc interactive display. Laser discs were very new at this time and cost over $2500 each to manufacture. This laser disc was produced to be used with specially designed players that would allow for touch-screen interaction from visitors to the B.C. Pavilion. These machines no longer exist; to get an idea of what options were made available pause the playback to view what the touch-screen displays looked like.
Item includes visual vignettes featuring footage to represent various geographical areas of the province of British Columbia. Theme music plays in the background of the scenes; no dialogue. Brief written descriptions of each area of the province precede each section of footage. At 00:10:23 - 00:10:24 screen shots of all of the various touch screen menu screens appear - to see these please slow down the playback and pause for each. Starting at 00:10:26 the footage plays out that would have been associated and parsed out for the various selected menu choices. At 00:12:08-00:12:11 more screen shots of selections flash by, again slow or pause to view these fully. Starting at 00:12:12 more groupings of clips of British Columbia can be viewed.
