Major Matthews' annotation on the back of the postcard reads, "1904. First car for hire in Vancouver. First taxi - White steamer. Owned by William Donald Haywood, pioneer, September 1885, of Commercial Hotel. The driver was sometimes Hugh E. Campbell, pionner, 1886. See photo C.V. Traus, N.q.P. Presented, 1950, by Ernest S. Robson. Argyle St." An annotation in different handwriting reads, "or 1903."

Item is a postcard printed with an image of the North Vancouver ferry, the "St. George," travelling between North Vancouver to Vancouver. The North Shore mountains are pictured behind the ferry. On the verso of this postcard is a hand-written description of the image, reading "The 'St. George' when first operated about 1904 or 1905." Following that sentence is a description of the road pictured at the shore behind the ferry.
