Ernest Cooper journal

Journal is a handwritten account of Ernest Cooper's journey from Liverpool, England, to Vancouver, May 24th to June 10th, 1888. Mr. Cooper crossed the Atlantic aboard the C.P.R. steamship S.S. Vancouver, and crossed the continent via Canadian Pacific Railway. The account documents Mr. Cooper's travels and includes detailed descriptions of conditions aboard ship; observations on differences between "steerage," "intermediate," and "saloon" passenger status; encounters with other passengers; activities of crew and passengers; sightings of wildlife; weather and sea conditions; a brief sight-seeing stop in Montreal; experiences with new currency, observations of "Indians" at rail stations across the prairies; impressions of Winnipeg; descriptions of views and vistas passing the Rockies and Selkirk mountains; comments on the Chinese presence along the Fraser River, and arrival in Vancouver.

Cooper, Ernest

[Kiwanis Club membership certificate - Howard Charles Green]

Item is an honorary membership certificate, Kiwanis Club of West Point, made out to "The Honourable Howard Charles Green," 1964. Howard Green was a Vancouver Member of Parliament in 1935 and from 1949-1963. He served as Minister of Public Works, 1951-1959, Acting Minister of Defence Production, 1957-1958, and Secretary of State for External Affairs, 1959.

Lord Stanley of Preston address

The collection consists of an illuminated address presented to Lord Stanley of Preston, Governor General of Canada, on the occasion of his visit to Vancouver in 1889. Lord Stanley of Preston, Governor General of Canada, and Lady Stanley visited Vancouver in October 1889. It was the first vice-royal visit to the new city. He dedicated Stanley Park on October 29. The address presented a program for the development of Vancouver.

Poster portrait of Queen Victoria from first CPR train

Item consists of the portrait which adorned the headlight of C.P.R. 374, a 44 x 57 cm coloured poster of Queen Victoria, bordered with scenes depicting aspects of her reign. On May 23, 1887 - the eve of Queen Victoria's birthday in the Golden Jubilee year of her reign - the first trans-Canada passenger train from Montreal made its entrance into Vancouver. The locomotive - C.P.R. 374 - was decorated with flowers, legends and this portrait of Queen Victoria.

Vivian Henderson collection

Collection consists of a copy of a one page letter dated March 30, 1959 from J.S. Matthews to Miss Vivian Henderson of 5592 Alma Road in response to a letter that she had written to him. Subjects of the letter include Matthews' days as an office boy, the decoration of Cordova Street after the death of Queen Victoria, and Miss Henderson's donation of an item pertaining to the Homer Street Methodist Church.
