City Accountant's cash books

Series consists of debit and credit journals which recorded "to cash" (accounts payable, e.g. engineering costs, health expenses, administrative expenses of boards and committees, and payroll), and "by cash" (accounts receivable, e.g. business license fees, water fees, Police Court fines, the poll tax, dog [license?] fees, cemetery fees, etc.). Dates not represented are 17 Feb. to 31 Dec. 1888 and 1 Jan. 1892 to 31 Mar. 1896 (i.e. these cash books must have gone missing). Arranged chronologically.

Abbott family photograph collection

The series consists of an Abbott family photograph album showing various scenes pertaining to the Canadian Pacific Railway and its official events, various British Columbia scenes and Vancouver streetscapes; and an album prepared by Edwards Brothers showing scenes around British Columbia, primarily views of Vancouver, Rossland and Sandon.

Health by-laws record book

Series consists of a single bound volume listing infractions against the City's Health by-laws. The contents of the volume are as follows: police court cases (p.1-30); journal of work, 1900 (p.50-66); journal of work, 1901 (67-77); journal of work, 1902 (p.78-86, 88); list of persons vaccinated at Sechelt (p.81); letter to City Clerk regarding smallpox accounts (p.85-87); and a list of plans received for plumbing permits (p.150-210).

These events include the development of the company, advertisements, disputes between the company and the city of Vancouver Government, strikes of the employees, and public opinion towards the company. Series consists of records relating to Osborne J. Pierce's career as an architect and his position as a Superintendent of Drawing for the City of Chicago Department of Public Instruction. Records include correspondence, letters of recommendation, account books, notebooks and journals, a patent, a report, certificates, a book, a directory, business cards and advertisements.
Additional material intermingled with these records includes poetry and prose by Osborne J. Pierce, including autobiographical prose, family history notes, photographs, watercolours and drawings.

Series consists of incoming letters from private companies or individuals brought before the Board of Works relating to the construction and maintenance of road, sewer, and water systems kept by the City Engineer. Arranged chronologically by Board of Works meeting dates.

Water application record books

Series consists of a record of applications for water service, in chronological order by date of application. Entries are numbered consecutively and the applicant's name, address, and city lot number are recorded. The earlier volume was begun by the Vancouver Water Works Company, a private utility which supplied the city's water before the City took it over.

Robert Burns McMicking letterbooks

Series includes letters written by Robert Burns McMicking, manager of the Victoria and Esquimalt Telephone Company, relating to the day-today workings of the telephone and telegraph services of the time. Series also offers insights into the operation of the Victoria City Council, B.C. Government, Bell Telephone Company of Canada, and other organizations.

Staff Registers

Series consists of two staff registers for employees of the C.P.R., showing name, age, date of entry into service, position, alterations in employment salary, etc. The majority of the entries are for operators and linemen although also include positions of clerks, messengers, janitors etc. These books appear to be for the Telegraph Department. Registers are marked as Vol. 1, 1886-1907, and Vol. 2,1907-1912, were continuously used over those years. Note that dates of service for individual employees also show earlier years in the 1880s.

Papers relating to other railways

The series consists of correspondence and writings relating to other railways including the Canadian North, the Grand Trunk Pacific, The Coast Kootney, the A.B.C and the Vancouver.

Series includes minutes of the Legislation Committee of the Vancouver Board of Trade as well as minutes of the Land Settlement Committee (May 15, 1912-Nov. 8, 1912), the Civic Committee (Nov. 11, 1902), and the Legal Committee (Jan. 15, 1913-Feb. 3, 1913).
