Early Canadian militia in British Columbia

Series consists of records relating to the activities of the 6th Regiment D.C.O.R. prior to the First World War, as well as to the training, battles, homecoming, honours, and ongoing association of the 102nd Battalion, C.E.F. and its members. Also included are records relating to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Regiment, Canadian Garrison Artillery (which preceded the 6th Regiment, D.C.O.R. and was part of the contingent from B.C. to the South African War). Includes correspondence, news clippings, narrative notes, photographs, company roll books, field service books, financial records, postcards, publications, maps, insurance policies, and ephemera. Arrangement is roughly chronological. Incoming and outgoing correspondence is arranged chronologically and alphabetically, respectively.

The collection consists of Major Matthews' private papers and records gathered by Matthews relating to the history of Vancouver when he was City Archivist. It includes numerous military records; collected photographs, [186-?]-1968; correspondence and pamphlets relating to Vancouver's water supply; examples of letter-heads, business stationery, tickets, notices and so on used in Vancouver in the 1880s; records of the planning and building of the First Narrows Bridge, Vancouver; an obituary book of clippings from newspapers; correspondence and clippings relating to unemployment and relief in Vancouver, 1931-1939; clippings relating to mayors of Vancouver, 1932-1971; clippings, photographs and menus relating to the visit of H.R.H. Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, 1951; clippings relating to distinguished visitors to Vancouver 1928-1953; a scrapbook of clippings relating to pioneer Vancouver aviator, William Stark, 1912; genealogical records relating to the family of J.S. Matthews; numerous topical and categorical files relating to a wide variety of subjects; and a series of index cards describing the history of street and place names in Greater Vancouver.

Dried wedding bouquet of Margaret McCleery

Item is a small dried and pressed flower bouquet which has been encased in glass. The flowers were given to Major J.S. Matthews by Mrs. Margaret Mackie (nee McCleery) after her wedding Mar. 17, 1945.

Matthews dried and encased the flowers and added a note: "On 17 March 1945, being Irish, Miss Margaret Elizabeth McCleery, youngest daughter of Fitzgerald McCleery, who, together with his brother Samuel, were the first settlers on the site of Vancouver, 1862, astonished me , near the City Hall, by informing me that I would never see my old friend Miss McCleery again: that early that morning at the Manse she had been married, and presented her husband, Robert Mackie, son. of Thos. Mackie, whose brother, William, pre-empted D.L. 472; i.e. part of Fairview. She graciously gave me her wedding bouquet, primroses and some blue flower, yellow, green and blue the colors, picked from her own, and her late father's garden on the North Arm, Fraser River. J.S. Matthews."

Item is a print of a map by Major James Skitt Matthews, City Archivist, showing villages, landmarks and rivers of Howe Sound and Burrard Inlet using their indigenous names. The map also shows elevations and wildlife populating the area. It was compiled between 1931 and 1937, with the assistance of August Jack Haatsalano (Khahtsahlano), whose attestation is included on the map. Notes on the map explain the map's nomenclature.
