Dramaturgical services

Dramaturgical services are the initial reading and critiquing of scripts, and more in-depth analysis and revision of promising plays. This series does not contain scripts, but consists of script reports with names of authors, titles of plays, dates, signed comments by readers, and recommendations for further action by The New Play Centre. There are two subseries: one arranged chronologically, and the other arranged alphabetically by the last name of playwrights.

Agency services

Agency services are those activities of The New Play Centre in which it acts as the agent for playwrights developed through its system. The series consists of correspondence regarding the promotion of playwrights Leonard Angel and John Lazarus, 1982-1987, and correspondence regarding promotion of plays and playwrights, 1977-1979. The Angel and Lazarus files are arranged alphabetically by author and then chronologically. The "theatre files" are arranged alphabetically by the names of the theatrical companies.

Correspondence

This series contains incoming and outgoing correspondence relating to a wide range of The New Play Centre activities involving the Artistic and Managing Director, Pamela Hawthorn, the Administrator, Patricia Hall, and General Manager (Administrator and Production Manager), Edgar Dobie. It is divided into four subseries.

Pamela Hawthorn's personal scripts

The scripts in this series contain notations by Pamela Hawthorn. Some are early drafts of plays produced later, others are not duplicated in other series. Some are originals and most are dated. It is not certain whether or not all of the scripts in this series were developed through The New Play Centre. Some may have been sent to Ms. Hawthorne to read on her own. Besides scripts, there are three audio cassettes of songs for plays, including one for Ma! by Eric Nicol, an audio reel of the play "1792 etc." and two song tapes, press clippings for "Jack Spratt", and a publicity file for the Green Thumb Theatre production of "Raft Baby".

Film and video program scripts

The New Play Centre added a film and video program to its services in 1985. This series contains scripts developed, and some produced, under this program in 1986 and 1987. There are two subseries.

Financial records

This series consists of annual financial statements of The New Play Centre, 1971-1978, Canada Council grant applications, 1977-1980, and the theatre construction project. Other financial statements, budgets and grant applications can be found in the series "Subject files". Financial transactions regarding individual productions can be found in the series "Production files". Financial transactions related to promotion and royalties can be found in the series "Agency services".

Production files

The production files are arranged chronologically and each file is labelled with the name of the production. The files contain correspondence, production notes, financial records, actors' agreements, programs, flyers, and other publicity material for each production.

Publicity files

This series consists of three subseries of files containing newsletters, flyers, brochures, programs, press releases and press clippings regarding The New Play Centre, its productions, and playwrights associated with the Centre.

Prompt scripts

This series consists of scripts that went into workshop or full production. The scripts contain changes and directors' notations regarding instructions to actors and technicians. They are arranged alphabetically by the name of the playwright or the title of the production series.

Subject files

These subject files contain a variety of records and other materials regarding the activities of The New Play Centre and other organizations with which it has been associated. The files include compiled histories of the Centre, correspondence, minutes, agendas, clippings, programs, annual reports, grant applications 1971-1982, budgets, newsletters, resumes and list of plays.

CBC scripts

Subseries consists of scripts submitted to CBC television and produced for their series "Lies from Lotusland". They are arranged alphabetically by the author's name.

Pamela Hawthorn's correspondence

Subseries contains incoming and outgoing correspondence relating to a wide range of The New Play Centre activities involving the Artistic and Managing Director, Pamela Hawthorn.

This subseries does not contains scripts, but consists of script reports with names of authors, titles of plays, dates, signed comments by readers, and recommendations for further action by The New Play Centre. Arranged chronologically.

Grant applications

Subseries consists of Canada Council grant applications and the theatre construction project. Arranged chronologically.

Public relations

Subseries contains The New Play Centre newsletters, 1975-1986, The New Play Centre newspapers, 1987-1989, and undated programs and flyers.

CKVU scripts

Subseries consists of scripts or proposals which were submitted to CKVU. They are arranged alphabetically by author's name.

Publicity clippings

Subseries contains newsclippings regarding The New Play Centre and its productions, playwright Tom Cone and other playwrights, 1972-1984, the Playwrights' Union of Canada, 1975-1988, and West Coast Players Company, 1973-1976.

Publicity packages

Subseries contains publicity materials: press releases, flyers, brochures, programs, and some publicity rates - regarding a particular production. The files are labelled with the titles of the productions, and are arranged chronologically.
