Sherwood and Evelyn Lett family fonds

Fonds consists of records of Sherwood Lett including personal papers, 1908-1964, including diaries and correspondence, military papers, 1845, 1914-1965, covering service in World Wars I and II as well as peace-time associations; diplomatic papers, 1947-1955, covering the 1947 Canadian Mission to Japan and the 1954-1955 Canadian participation in the International Commission in Vietnam; judicial papers, 1955-1964, concerning the appointment as Chief Justice to the Supreme Court of B.C. 1955, and as Chief Justice to the B.C. Court of Appeal, 1963; university papers, 1951-1964, including Lett’s election as Chancellor in 1951. In addition, there are scrapbooks, clippings, and a collection of publications, 1916-1965. The fonds also includes photographs depicting the personal, professional, military and academic life of Sherwood Lett.

Fonds also includes records of Evelyn Lett, consisting of a small amount of letters of support for her nomination of the Order of Canada, 1997, a service award, 1998, news clippings and articles, 1975-1976, and a file related to family member Charles Plant.

File contains a book of paintings and sketches by Emily Carr, publications of the UBC Alumni Society and the Vancouver Bar Association; and articles and books relating to the Rhodes Scholarship and the history of the South Saskatchewan Regiment.

Evelyn Story Lett papers

Series consists of letters of support for Evelyn Story Lett to be awarded the Order of Canada, 1997; VGH Auxiliary volunteer award and letter by Mayor Owen, 1998; news clippings regarding Brock House Society, ca. 1976; and a UBC Reports newsletter anniversary article that includes quotes from Evelyn Lett recounting being a student during WWI, Oct. 1975. Series also includes a file related to Charles Plant (1891-1978), who worked in the local lumber industry for Bloedel, Stewart & Welch Ltd.

Charles Plant

File consists of records pertaining to Charles Plant, primarily related to his work as a shingle manufacturing executive at Bloedel, Stewart and Welch Ltd.; includes a news and magazine clipping, 1939 photograph print of industry professionals from Canada and the United States, and a reprint copy of the Feb. 1894 issue of the Puget Sound Lumberman which includes statistical information for British Columbia. File also includes a roster of the 1940 Kiwanis Club members.

Diplomatic papers, Canadian Mission to Japan

Series consists of reports, articles and correspondence gathered by Lett when he was a member of the Canadian Mission to Japan, China and Hong Kong to encourage peace and the revival of trade. Series covers preparation for actual works of the mission, and the mission's reports.

Series also includes records relating to Lett's work when he was Chief Justice of the B.C. Supreme Court.

Inquiry on the Second Narrow Bridge

File contains a Royal Commission certificate, report and a draft of the report relating to Lett's inquiry, as the appointed Royal Commissioner, on the collapse of a portion of the Second Narrow Bridge under construction across Burrard Inlet in 1958.
