Combines Investigations Act inquiry records

Subseries consists of records documenting BC Sugar's response to a Combines Investigation Act inquiry into its manufacture, distribution and sale of sugar, including operations of its subsidiaries in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and subsequent litigation.

The subseries includes copies of operational records of BC Sugar and its subsidiaries, as well as original records removed from their original recordkeeping systems, to submit as evidence of the companies' activities during the inquiry and subsequent litigation. The records include correspondence, briefs, collected articles relevant to the case and similar court cases, reports, exhibits, and press clippings. The records also include copies of court records, including Statements of Evidence.

Subseries consists of records documenting BC Sugar's international sugar trading activities.

The subseries is made up of telexes between BC Sugar's head office in Vancouver and their international sugar broker, Messrs. C. Czarnikow, Limited, located in London, England.

H.A. Simons joint venture records

Subseries consists of records documenting a proposed joint venture project between BC Sugar and H.A. Simons (International) Ltd. for the development of a sugar beet processing plant in Iraq.

The subseries includes copies of the proposal to the Iraqi government, reports, correspondence between BC Sugar and H.A. Simons regarding the development of the proposal, correspondence with the various Iraqi government departments involved in the project, and reference material used to assist in developing the proposal.

Insurance appraisals and property assessments

Subseries consists of records documenting insurance coverage for the various properties owned by BC Sugar and its subsidiaries.

The subseries is made up of property appraisals for replacement values (often referred to as an Appraisement) of the plant and equipment of the processing plants operated by BC Sugar and its subsidiaries. The assessments were compiled by a variety of professional appraisal firms on a periodic basis. The subseries also includes copies of Indistrial Assessment Schedules of the BC Sugar site in Vancouver prepared by the BC Assessment Authority.

Fonds consists of records which document a wide range of functions and activities of The British Columbia Sugar Refining Company, Limited, its holding company, BC Sugar Refinery, Limited, and various subsidiaries. The functions and activities include: corporate governance and capitalization; shareholder relations; acquisition, management and oversight of subsidiaries and other investments; liaison with stakeholders, including other sugar manufacturers; research on sugar beet production and sugar refining; international sugar trading; development and maintenance of production facilities; promotion of sugar use by consumers; and financial, human resources, and other administrative activities that supported the operations of the Company.

The records include correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, a variety of types of financial records, laboratory analysis and refining records, photographs of staff and facilities, marketing artwork, publications, and technical and architectural plans of various refineries and mills. Much of the audio visual material documents the sugar industry, with emphasis on refineries and sugar plantations owned by BC Sugar and its subsidiaries.

President’s Office records

Series consists of records documenting executive activity of BC Sugar, including activities of the President and Secretary. A portion of the records contained in the series do not appear to document the activities of the President's Office itself, but may have been retained in the President's Office due to the sensitive nature of the records. A portion of the records are For Information copies sent for the President's files.

The records in the series document interactions with shareholders, including payment of dividends and transfers of share ownership; deliberations of the Board of BC Sugar, the Company's response to Combines Investigation Act inquiries and subsequent litigation; international sugar trading; joint ventures; and acquiring insurance coverage for the plant and properties of BC Sugar and its subsidiaries. Records of these activities may be found within their respective subseries.

The series also includes records relating to the 1917 strike by BC Sugar workers, the company's response to unionization efforts and collective bargaining, liaison with external organizations such as the Sugar Association and competitor firms, the acquisition of subsidiary companies, and operational and financial reporting to head office by subsidiary companies.

The series is made up of correspondence; financial, operational and other reports; notes and memoranda; court documents; articles of incorporation; employee name and classification lists; production statistics; assessment and appraisal reports; and clippings scrapbooks regarding BC Sugar and the sugar industry in general.

Ozama sugar plantation and factory records

Series consists of records documenting the operations of the Ozama plantation and factory, its relationships with its parent company and the Dominican government, and the eventual sale of the company.

The records include reports, statistics, correspondence, photographs, financial records and production reports.

Refinery foreman's records

Series documents the day-to-day production operations of the British Columbia Sugar Refining Company refinery in Vancouver. The records document production inventories and management of refinery staff.

The records consist of small notebooks where someone in a supervisory position (assumed to be the refinery foreman) recorded information on various operations, such as: available stocks of sugar products and production supplies, shipments, and contributions of refinery employees to the War Fund.

Vice-President’s office records

Series consists of records that were identified as being in the custody of the BC Sugar Vice-President's office at the time that they were removed by the staff of the BC Sugar Museum. The records primarily document the oversight of BC Sugar's subsidiary companies. The records may have been retained by various Vice-Presidents from previous roles.

The records include correspondence, harvest and production reports, agricultural production reports, and reference material.

Distribution subsidiaries records

Series consists of records created by BC Sugar and its distribution subsidiaries in Alberta and Saskatchewan, documenting the founding, administration and operations of those two companies.

The records include correspondence, shareholder certificates, tax and companies registration records, financial records, and operating expense reports.

Agricultural research records

Series consists of records documenting research into increasing the productivity of sugar beet production and development of new sugar beet varieties conducted by BC Sugar's Agricultural Research Department and researchers at the various subsidiary companies. Research conducted at subsidiaries was regularly reported to BC Sugar's lab in Vancouver.

Records include annual agricultural and agricultural research reports, research notes, correspondence, photographs, contracts with farmers, field records, and an annotated bibliography.

Sugar sales records

Series consists of records which document the promotion of sugar use, and advertising and sales of BC Sugar's products.

Records include early salesmen handbooks, some promotional and nutritional materials about sugar, and grocery magazines. The series also contains records which appear to document administration of the sales department office.

Purchasing records

Series consists of records documenting the acquisition of raw sugar supplies, and processing equipment and supplies by the BC Sugar Purchasing Department, as well as the sale of refining by-products and surplus supplies.

The records include telex and telegraphic cypher books, lists of raw sugar prices, correspondence, notebooks listing suppliers and purchases, a notbook listing sales of surplus and production by-product materials, and equipment catalogues and manuals.
