Robert Eldridge Malkin diary - Volume one

This item is the first volume of Robert Eldridge Malkin's diary of his trip through Great Britain and several European countries in 1937.

The volume dates from April 5, 1937, to July 12, 1937. It begins with Malkin's departure from Vancouver and travel through the United States to Central Canada, where he visited Toronto and Montreal, and then travelled to Washington, D.C., and New York City, from which city he travelled on the Queen Mary to Southhampton. Next, the diary describes Malkin’s sojourn in London, where he spent his time seeing sights and visiting with friends and acquaintances in London and the surrounding area. During this time he travelled to Oxford, Stratford-Upon-Avon, and other towns and sites in England, and then left London to visit Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.

Volume one concludes with 30 pages of a diary kept by Malkin's friend and travelling companion William Gibson while travelling in Russia from July 8-18, 1937. Malkin planned to accompany Gibson on this trip to Russia but was denied entry.

This volume of Malkin's diary, like the two that accompany it, includes photographs, which are mostly captioned, and which were predominantly taken by Malkin or his traveling companions. These photos show places Malkin visited and people with whom he socialized during his sojourn. Each volume of the diary also includes clippings from magazines and newspapers that Malkin added to compliment his text.

In addition, each volume of the diary includes the names of many of the people whom Malkin encountered during his travels. While in England, and particularly London, Malkin met with many former Vancouverites, among them members of the Bell-Irving, Spencer, Hamber, Taylor, Bloedel, Reifle, Farris, and Rogers families (including Rosemary Elisabeth Rogers, Malkin’s future wife), as well as other friends, former schoolmates, relatives, and family acquaintances. Each volume of Malkin's diary also contains remarks and observations that refer to Vancouver and other places on B.C.’s west coast.

Robert Eldridge Malkin diary - Volume three

This item is the third volume of Robert Eldridge Malkin's diary of his trip through Great Britain and several European countries in 1937.

Volume three starts on September 13, 1937, when Malkin was still in London. In October, Malkin noted that he had secured a position as a tea taster, and in some of the following entries he described visits to London tea auction houses, tea tasting rooms, and a large tea factory. This volume of the diary also chronicles Malkin’s trip to Paris to visit the World Exposition there, and his return by ship to New York City and travel by bus back to Vancouver, stopping in various American cities along the way, and arriving home on December 19, 1937. The last entry in the diary is titled “Reflections” and is not dated, but it is likely that Malkin made it in April 1937.

This item is the second volume of Robert Eldridge Malkin's diary of his trip through Great Britain and several European countries in 1937.

This volume dates from July 14, 1937, to September 12, 1937. It chronicles more of Malkin's travels in Sweden and follows Malkin back to Denmark and Germany, then to Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Italy, France, Switzerland, back to England, and then to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Volume 2 ends shortly after Malkin's return to London.
