Combines Investigations Act inquiry records

Subseries consists of records documenting BC Sugar's response to a Combines Investigation Act inquiry into its manufacture, distribution and sale of sugar, including operations of its subsidiaries in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and subsequent litigation.

The subseries includes copies of operational records of BC Sugar and its subsidiaries, as well as original records removed from their original recordkeeping systems, to submit as evidence of the companies' activities during the inquiry and subsequent litigation. The records include correspondence, briefs, collected articles relevant to the case and similar court cases, reports, exhibits, and press clippings. The records also include copies of court records, including Statements of Evidence.

Subseries consists of records documenting BC Sugar's international sugar trading activities.

The subseries is made up of telexes between BC Sugar's head office in Vancouver and their international sugar broker, Messrs. C. Czarnikow, Limited, located in London, England.

H.A. Simons joint venture records

Subseries consists of records documenting a proposed joint venture project between BC Sugar and H.A. Simons (International) Ltd. for the development of a sugar beet processing plant in Iraq.

The subseries includes copies of the proposal to the Iraqi government, reports, correspondence between BC Sugar and H.A. Simons regarding the development of the proposal, correspondence with the various Iraqi government departments involved in the project, and reference material used to assist in developing the proposal.

Ozama Sugar Plantation and Factory reports

Subseries consists of records documenting the day-to-day operations of the Ozama Sugar Plantation and Factory in the Dominican Republic.

The large majority of the records consist of the production and operations reports submitted to the BC Sugar head office in Vancouver on a regular basis. During the production seaon (approximately January to June each year) the reports were submitted weekly. At other times the reports were submitted every two or three weeks. The reports include general remarks on operations, comments and statistics on weather, equipment reports, labour productivity statistics, notes on sugar cane planting and harvesting, reports on the work of various units at the Factory, and cane processing production data.

The sub-series also includes records relating to the sale of Ozama, specifically preparation for the sale, including assessments of factory assets.

Payroll records

Subseries consists of records documenting the payment of salaries and pensions, and aggregate accounting for payroll and other staff related expenses.

The records include early company payroll books listing non-refinery staff and their salary payments, as well as later aggregate accounting records for payroll and other staff-related costs. The sub-series also includes a small run of pension payment listings.

Governance records

Subseries consists of records documenting the governance of the Manitoba Sugar Company.

The records are meeting minutes of the Board of Directors of the company, copies of shareholder's meeting minutes, company by-laws and related correspondence.

Insurance appraisals and property assessments

Subseries consists of records documenting insurance coverage for the various properties owned by BC Sugar and its subsidiaries.

The subseries is made up of property appraisals for replacement values (often referred to as an Appraisement) of the plant and equipment of the processing plants operated by BC Sugar and its subsidiaries. The assessments were compiled by a variety of professional appraisal firms on a periodic basis. The subseries also includes copies of Indistrial Assessment Schedules of the BC Sugar site in Vancouver prepared by the BC Assessment Authority.

Albert Flegenheimer correspondence

Series consists of correspondence documenting the efforts of Albert Flegenheimer, the company's founder and one of its initial investors, to acquire the investment, capital equipment, land, material and skilled labour needed to set up the Manitoba Sugar Company refinery.

The records document Flegenheimer's efforts to find investors, particularly in Germany and the United States, negotiating support from the Government of Manitoba, acquiring the capital equipment for the mill and attempting to get the equipment out of Europe as World War 2 began, and negotiating with the Government of Canada to acquiring visas and secure transportation for the skilled labourers he would need to fill senior positions at the refinery.
