A city celebrates

Item consists of a motion picture film depicting highlights of the Military Searchlight Tattoo at Empire Stadium as a part of the Vancouver International Festival marking the city's 75th anniversary. The film also includes scenes of the SS Canberra entering the harbour, aerial views of the city, members of the New York Ballet Company playing on the beach, soldiers on a trampoline, and scenes of fishing in a river.

The tattoo itself includes bugle calls, military marching bands from around Canada and the UK, pipe bands, Scottish dancing, and a Royal Air Force gymnastic exhibition. The finale of the tattoo involved all 1066 performers on the field of Empire Stadium.

1st Narrows Bridge

Item is a color film which details the steps involved in constructing the Lions Gate Bridge (First Narrows Bridge) across the First Narrows of the Burrard Inlet (Vancouver, B.C.) in 1937 and 1938. The film, which appears to be professionally produced, captures the entire construction and assembly process, including the cutting of a road through Stanley Park, preparation of cofferdams and caissons, foundation pouring, erection of the main towers, hoisting and attaching cables, insertion of stiffening trusses, bridge surface pouring, application of protective paint, and other finishing touches, including the installation of sculptor Charles Marega's lions. The film also captures shots of key contributors A.J.T. Taylor and John Anderson, as well as the first cars to cross the span from end to end.

Item is a film showing Jean and Kenny McCuaig's trip south to Las Vegas and the Santa Anita horse races, Annette Island and Ketchikan Alaska, Mount Waddington, playing baseball, surf boards, camping at Penticton, the Grey Cup Parade in 1962 and Harrison Hot Springs.

1958 : A year to remember

Item is a film containing highlights of British Columbia's centennial year in Vancouver. Includes shots of an antique car parade, a tall ship at dock, naval vessels, street decorations in Vancouver, Chinese Freemasons parade (with drill team, dragon dance, etc.), a powwow, horse racing at Exhibition Park, PNE parade, and the last of the region's interurban streetcars. Film also includes footage showing the aftermath of the Second Narrows Bridge collapse.

Item is an amateur film documenting the Vancouver Skating Club's 1953 production of "Stars on Ice" featuring Sonja Henie. Other featured skaters include: Elaine Dawson, Diane Henderson, Jeanne and Thornton Opie, Jocelyn and Rothero Thacker, Audrey and Bill Corson, Jan Tors, Bill Lewis, Arlene McFarlane, Irene Turtle, Bill Corson, Marshall Beard, Loyette Shatilla, Gladys and Victor Hartley, Edy Rada, and Lorrie Perkins. Images also include a 150-pound cake presented by the VSC to Sonja Henie for her birthday.

Item is a film showing Patricia McCuaig from ages one to four years old, skating, the McCuaig family attending christenings, children's birthday parties, the family at Boundary Bay Beach and Wayne McCuaig as a baby. Other individuals identified in the film include Jean McCuaig, Kenny McCuaig, David Goodman, Marg Clarence, Dot Toombs, Lynn Drinnan, Wil McCuaig, Do McCuaig and Anna Lena McCuaig.

1858-1958 Centenary Vancouver BC

Item is an amateur film documenting early and present-day Vancouver. This film contains footage of the Second Narrows Highway Bridge collapse, construction of the Deas Island Tunnel and Woodward's Oakridge Shopping Centre, as well as footage of Centennial Beach Park, Fort Langley Park, Queen Elizabeth Arboretum and the Bowladrome in Kerrisdale. The exterior and interior of a Vancouver home, including footage of children at play and a Christmas celebration, are also documented. There are also images of still photographs from the early 1900s which document sunbathers at a beach, loggers at work and the Stanley Park Hollow Tree. A Pioneer Citizen certificate bearing the name Max Wiehand is also shown.

Film also shows a sequence at a zoo with tigers and bears, a car driving across the Golden Gate Bridge, Vancouver street scenes with flags and banners in preparation for the royal visit, City Hall and views looking north from the Burrard Bridge at downtown Vancouver.
