Administrative history
The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver was founded as the Vancouver Real Estate Exchange in 1919. The Exchange was formed by ten subscribers who were real estate agents or brokerages operating in the City. Membership grew rapidly, as the province increased oversight of the industry in the 1920s. The Board worked to promote the development of Vancouver and the industry itself and attempted to regulate the industry through arbitration and the establishment of standards of practice.
In 1948, the Exchange changed its name to the Vancouver Real Estate Board, though its functions remained the same. During the 1960s and 1970s, the Board changed its name twice again, to the Greater Vancouver Real Estate Board and Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver, respectively. As of 2018, the organisation is still named the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver.
Since inception, the Board's role has been to provide services to its members and to facilitate the development of the real estate industry. The Board represents members of the industry in Greater Vancouver to government and the public.
