Biographical history
Captain Henry Mowatt was born in New Brunswick and became master of a sailing ship there. He set about to master steam ships and was promoted rapidly by the C.P.R. in England. In 1918 he resigned and came to B.C., living in Vancouver, Haney and North Vancouver. He died in 1941 at age 83.

The fonds consists of personal papers, 1846-1940, including family records, a family portrait album, personal letters, private business correspondence and records pertaining to investments and business ventures; extensive records of ship's specifications and tests, material that passed through Captain Mowatt's hands when he worked for the C.P.R., 1900-1918; photographs of C.P.R. steamships; official C.P.R. correspondence, 1892-1924; papers, 1919-1923, relating to Captain Mowatt's duties as Port Warden with the Department of Marine and Fisheries at Vancouver; and printed works, 1839-1911.
