Name of creator
Administrative history
In 1969 a group of Vancouver area environmentalists, including members of the B.C. Chapter of the Sierra Club, gathered together to form the "Don't Make a Wave Committee" to protest underground nuclear tests being conducted by the United States in the Aleutian Islands. By 1970, the Committee was incorporated. Throughout 1970 and 1971, the Committee addressed a variety of ecological, environmental and social issues: air, water and land contamination, recycling waste, the Skagit Valley flooding and the Vietnam War. The name was officially changed in 1972 to the Greenpeace Foundation. Led by Bob Hunter, the Foundation supported an "anti-whaling" programme in 1974. In 1976 Greenpeace turned its attention to harp seal hunting.
