Administrative history
The United Community Services originated the Local Area Council approach to social planning in the City of Vancouver. The following year, the UCS and the City sought funding from the provincial government for a city Social Planning and Development Department which would encourage community residents to assume responsibility for improving the economic and social conditions of their neighbourhoods and assist in the establishment of community service teams. In 1969, both the UCS and the City of Vancouver recognized the existence of 21 local areas in the city. The Grandview Woodland Park Area Council, also known as the Woodland Park Area Resources Council, was the first Local Area Council in the city of Vancouver.
