Administrative history

Inspired by the proposal to build a third runway at the Vancouver Airport, the Fraser River Coalition was established in 1976. The following organizations jointly contributed to the formation of the Coalition: BC Public Interest Research Group; BC Wildlife Federation; Burns Bog Conservation Society; Community Forum on Airport Development; Federation of BC Naturalists; Save Our Parkland Association; Sierra Club; SPEC; Steelhead Society of BC; United Fishermen & Allied Workers' Union; Vancouver Natural History Society and Wreck Beach Preservation Society. These organizations did not have a formal relationship with the Fraser River Coalition other than an assumption that there would be agreement on the approaches taken by the Coalition.

The Fraser River Coalition works towards the preservation, conservation and enhancement of the Fraser River as an ecological unit. Research into proposed land use in and around the area resulted in newsletters to communicatewith and educate the public, as well as establishing communication with local government. The Fraser River Coalition is volunteer run and meets monthly.

Custodial history

Records were collected and maintained by June Binkert. The records were donated by Wendy Irish Turner who was a member of the Fraser River Coalition as well as a Chair of the Coalition for a period of time.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of textual records related to the concerns, areas of interest and actions of the Fraser River Coalition and are defined by the region in and around the Fraser River and more specifically the area around Vancouver International Airport.

There are minutes of the Vancouver International Airport Authority at which various Coalition members were attendees. YVR Environmental Advisory Committee minutes from 2005 are also included. Newspaper clippings, publications, pamphlets and notes are grouped into topics of interest generally around an environmental or wildlife issue within the Fraser River area including the Delta Port Expansion, UBC Pacific Spirit Park cliff erosion management planning and environmental assessments both provincially and nationally. Funding applications including the Vancity Community Partnership Program Form which funded the Fraser River Coalition Pamphlet series in 2003. These ten pamphlets describe and educate on areas of concern within the Fraser River. Correspondence to and from the Fraser River Coalition with the following: local community groups, Minister of Environment and Transportation, Deputy Prime Minister, Mayor, City Council in New Westminster and Vancouver as well as the Planning Departments of both regions as well as community members.
