Administrative history

In 1971 the Greater Vancouver Regional District formed the Community Forum on Airport Development with members from the community to involve the public in the early planning process regarding the establishment of a third runway at the Vancouver International Airport. In 1976, with the runway still not built, the community members made the decision to keep the Community Forum on Airport Development active with Wendy Irish Turner as the Chair. In 1991 the Community Forum on Airport Development applied for intervener status. In February of 1991, a municipal hearing which included a panel of environmental consultants resulted in an agreement that the 3rd runway could go ahead contingent on their following a list of recommendations including the protection of 130 hectares on Sea Island. In 1992 the Community Forum on Airport Development was dissolved and replaced by the new Environment Committee.
