Ng (Eng) - Yew Family - c. 1930s

Collector/curator's description reads: “1930, Vancouver. Photo of Ng Yew family. The children later changed their name from Ng to Eng. Back row, left to right: Joe Hong Eng, Chee Hong Eng, Dora Eng Mar, George Hong Eng. Front row: Jean Eng Marr, See Shee Eng, Baby Phyllis Harriet Eng, Jack Heen Yew Eng, Larry Noy Hong Eng.”

Ng Lin Kee

Collector/curator’s description reads: “Circa 1910, Vancouver. Portrait of Ng Lin Kee. Came for the CPR and afterwards became the first Chinese merchant in Ashcroft operated a general store and market garden. Ng also created its first scandal. He had 9 wives: 3 of them Chinese, and the other 6 were local native [Indigenous] women. Altogether he had 40 children. It is rumoured that in one week he became a father three times. He did not live with his wives but provided for all of them and his children. He died July 17, 1923 and was buried in Kamloops Cemetery.”

Opera performance - 1940s

Collector/curator's description reads: “C. 1940s, Vancouver. Photo of an opera performer in costume and on stage. The performer looks to be the actress Shwu-Hoang Po Hing. Two young Chinese girls and two adult men, one of whom is Louis Gain Wai, the owner of the Chung King Restaurant in Vancouver's Chinatown and a big supporter of the arts. They are on stage with the actress and appear to be preparing to offer the actress some gifts. This is the first of two photos taken at this performance.”

Opera performance - 1940s

Collector/curator's description reads: “C. 1940s, Vancouver. Photo of an opera performer in costume and on stage. The performer looks to be the actress Shwu-Hoang Po Hing. Two young Chinese girls and two adult men, (one of whom is Louis Gain Wai the Chung King Restaurant owner who is hidden on the left) are on stage with the actress and appear to be offering the actress some gifts. This is the second of two photos taken at this performance.”

Item is a film showing a parade on Pender Street with people dancing and walking with banners, as well as a scene with a group posing for photographs. The second part of the film shows dance performances on an indoor stage. Writing on box suggests the performances are by the Strathcona Folk Dance group and a dance group visiting from China.
