McKenzie, W. Saunders / J. A. Mateer. Capt." Written in black pen on mat verso: “[W Wateers] says:- / [indent] 'Old fashioned firemans uniforms, in the hose companies, blue / cloth blouse with white lettering and trimming; in the hook and / ladder, red blouse, with white trimming' / [indent] Helmet of hard fibre, not very heavy or uncomfortable / to wear; all white with numerals in white on black or blue / ground signifying No 1 or No 2 Company / [indent] Trumpet or megaphone, nickel silver, with green cord and tassel, (for fireman’s insignia), carried by / Captain of Company on parade, and made for / service in giving orders, but never actually used / except for display or ceremonial. They were actually / used by the very practical pioneer volunteer fire brigade / of Vancouver./ 13th [Nov]. 1936 J.S. [undecipherable signature]”
