Carpenter was born in Tennessee and is recorded as working as a photographer in Silverton Colorado in 1889 and in Telluride Colorado in 1890. He moved to Rossland in 1896 or early 1897, during a mining boom. He created composite panoramic photographs (from smaller photographs adhered to form a longer image) before Cirkut panorama cameras were available. He produced a Cirkut-type panorama of Spokane in 1903 before Cirkut cameras were patented. He later had a studio in Spokane, Washington, 1905-1908. He worked in Vancouver, B.C. at 303 Hastings St. W., 1910-1913. He died in Port Angeles, Washington.
