History
The Wartime Information Board was established in September 1942 to replace the Bureau of Public Information. The Board was responsible for coordinating public information services of the government, supervising the release of Canadian war news and information, and facilitating distribution of Canadian war information between departments and to the public.
The Board was ordered to create a common outlook amongst Canadians on their identity and perception on the war. The material was to inform on the war and encourage wartime participation, to ensure high morale and patriotic fervour. The Board established foreign offices, gave guided tours, studied Canadian news, and developed press information. The Board was an early developer of public opinion polling techniques in Canada.
In January 1943, all photographic operations came under the jurisdiction of the National Film Board, though the Wartime Information Board continued to fund this activity. The NFB produced graphic material for the government's war effort, including the making and distribution of films.
Throughout the war, the Wartime Information Board published a monthly official account of the war effort in the form of a pamphlet called “Canada at War”. It covered a wide range of topics, from wartime industry, women at war, etc.
