Name of creator
In 1880 the Victoria and Esquimalt Telephone Company was granted its charter. On the mainland, the New Westminster and Port Moody Telephone Company (later the New Westminster and Burrard Inlet Telephone Company) was granted its charter in 1884. Other companies were created throughout the province, and in 1905 the various telephone companies amalgamated to form the British Columbia Telephone Company.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of a company history, 1870-1939; McMicking letterbooks, 1871-1911; financial records of various telephone companies, 1885-1960; engineers' field books, 1912-1966; newspaper clippings, 1891-1907; general records, 1903 -1954; commercial surveys 1929 -1950; and photographs, [ca. 1915] -1954.
The fonds is arranged into 8 series: British Columbia Telephone Company commercial survey, Engineers field books, Financial records of various telephone companies, General records, Historical records, Newspaper clippings, Robert Burns McMicking letterbooks, and photographs.
Immediate source of acquisition
Donated by the British Columbia Telephone Company in 1974-1979 in 8 separate accruals.
Includes records from separate accruals formerly identified and described as AM339 and AM634. These descriptions have been amalgameted into a single fonds; citations for these records should use only AM634.
