Biographical history
B.C. Hilliam was born in Yorkshire, England as Bentley Collingwood Smailes. He first performed under the pseudonym Lloyd Holland. He changed his name to Bentley Collingwood Hilliam. He came to Canada in 1911 and began amateur theatre productions with Florence Norminton on the North Shore in 1913. He worked as an actor and songwriter. Hilliam performed music and comedy with a troupe called "The Smart Set", then with a group known as "The Queries." His major musical comedy revue "The Belle of Burrard" was performed in 1913. He also wrote the song "Here's a Ho! Vancouver". He served as a Lieutenent with the Canadian Engineers in World War I. In 1919, Hilliam moved to New York for six years and then returned to England, where he continued his career in music hall entertainment. He was "Flotsam" in the comedy duo of Mr. Flotsam and Mr. Jetsam.

The fonds consists of musical scores for "The Belle of Burrard" and "Oh! Oh! Oh! Captain B", programmes from the Lonsdale Theatre, 1913, and other theatres, correspondence re Hilliam's Vancouver career, a transcript of an oral interview of Hilliam, clippings and a photograph.
