Schwarze Studio was a commercial photographic studio founded in Nanaimo, B.C. by Frederick Schwarze some time after his arrival from Germany in 1910 or 1911. By the 1920's two of Schwarze's children, Henry and Hilda, worked for him as photographers. After Frederick's death in 1936, the studio passed to his son Henry Frederick Schwarze, who operated the studio while co-owning it with his step-mother Margaret. Hilda, presumably, ceased working as a photographer after her marriage in 1929.
After Henry's death in 1951, the studio may have been taken over by his younger brother Norbert, a professional photographer who had operated his own studio in Courtenay, B.C. in the late 1920s. Norbert worked as a professional photographer until his death in 1966, but it is not known if he was associated with the family business.
As of 2015, there is still a Schwarze Studios operating in Nanaimo, but it is not known if this firm is related to the original company.
