Administrative history
Vancouver Community College (VCC) was established as Vancouver City College in 1965 through a merger of four local educational institutions: the Vancouver Vocational Institute (1949), the Vancouver School of Art, the Vancouver School Board's Night School Program, and the King Edward Senior Matriculation and Continuing Education Centre. Classes were initially held in the facilities of the King Edward Centre.
Due to high demand, the King Edward Centre soon proved to be an inadequate space. In 1970, the college opened a new campus in Langara, while the King Edward Centre as the main campus, housed the Special Programs Division.
A college Council was established as the governing body in December of 1970. Administrative services were provided by the Vancouver School Board until the spring of 1973, when the college agreed to separate from the Vancouver School Board and established its own Regional Offices. At this time, Vancouver City College was renamed as Vancouver Community College. On November 23, 1978, in accordance with the provisions of the college and Provincial Institutes Act, Vancouver Community College was designated by Order-in-Council. This gave the college a corporate life completely separate from the School Board, permitting the college Board to authorize land holdings, borrowings and other activities attendant to a corporation.
On June 20, 1973 the King Edward Centre building was destroyed by fire. The VCC continued to operate on this site using portables and the gymnasium. In 1983, the main campus was moved from the King Edward Centre location at 12th Avenue and Oak Street to its current location at 1155 Broadway, now known as the Broadway campus.
In April 1994, Langara campus separated from Vancouver Community College to become Langara College. VCC has three campuses: the Broadway campus on East Broadway and the Downtown campus at Dunsmuir and Hamilton, the Annacis Island campus on Annacis Island, as well as three dozen satellite locations.
The College Board oversees the business of the college.
