Biographical history
The Yale and New Westminster Pilotage Authority was established under the terms of An Act Respecting Pilotage (1873) within the Department of Marine, Ottawa. In 1904, by Order in Council, the Pilotage District of Yale and New Westminster was divided into two: the New Westminster Pilotage District and the Vancouver Pilotage District. Bill 105 (1914) established the Minister of Marine and Fisheries as the Pilotage Authority. In December 1919, by Order in Council, the Pilotage District of B.C. was established.

The fonds consists of a minute book containing full records of the membership and all the meetings of the Board of the Yale and New Westminster Pilotage Authority, 1879-1904, and of the Vancouver Pilotage Authority, 1904-1920. There are also papers inserted in the book: printed pilotage bylaws, clippings, correspondence, a copy of a memorial to the Governor General, bank statements, printed Notice of Mariners re: B.C. Pilotage (1919, Ottawa), printed Order in Council re: establishment of Pilotage District of B.C. (1919, Ottawa), and a photograph of the Commissioners and Pilot of the Vancouver Pilotage District, 1879-1916.
