Administrative history

In 1944 members of the Canadian Waterfront Workers' Association in Vancouver voted to form Local 501 of the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union (ILWU). Over the next decade, the ILWU continued to organize British Columbia, establishing six other locals in Vancouver alone. January 1959 witnessed the establishment of the Canadian Area Council which was designed to provide Canadian locals of the ILWU with greater autonomy. In 1966, all seven Vancouver locals amalgamated to form Local 500.
