Administrative history
In 1889, a group of Vancouver painters formed Local 62 of the International Painters Union (formed in Baltimore in 1887). In 1899, following the reorganization of the International, a new Vancouver local, Local 138 was formed. Local 62 was consolidated with Local 138. The first president of the new local was W. Morrison, who had been president of Local 62. In late 1950, the Kitimat-Prince Rupert Local, founded during World War II, was amalgamated with Local 138. In 1962, the Drywall Taper Finisher section was added to the local. In 1971, Signwriters Local 726 amalgamated with Local 138. In 1969, the name of the union was changed to the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades.
