In 1976, the Hotel, Restaurant and Culinary Employees and Bartenders Union, Local 40, was created through a merger between the Hotel, Restaurant and Bartenders Union, Local 16 of Vancouver and the Beverage Dispensers and Culinary Workers Union, Local 835 of New Westminster. The association had been preceded by a merger between restaurant and hotel workers and bartenders in Vancouver in 1974.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of the constitutions and by-laws of the different Locals involved in the creation of Local 40; agreements and wage scales for unions in Canada and the United States; reports and briefs of the Liquor Enquiry Commission; scrapbooks chronicling the 1971 contract negotiations of Local 676 and the 1974 and 1976 mergers that resulted in the creation of Local 40; and newsclippings and speeches relating to the political campaign of Pat McGeer in 1969.
