Biographical history
The Hill family were Loyalists who came to Cape Breton Island from Boston. Albert J. Hill and Arthur Edmund Hill, the sons of J. L. Hill, came to B.C. in 1880 to work for the CPR. They were associated with surveys and construction in the Interior and on Vancouver Island, with the Coquitlam Water Works Company, and with New Westminster projects. In 1890 A.E. Hill was appointed superintendent of waterworks for New Westminster. In turn, he was associated with the Vancouver, Victoria and Eastern Railway, the Nicola, Kamloops and Similkameen Railway, the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, and the British Columbia Electric Railway. He died in 1921. His widow and daughter corresponded with family members in Eastern Canada, and both were very active in the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Society.

Albert J. Hill came to B.C. in 1880 with his brother Arthur Edmund Hill to work for the CPR. Bothe brothers were civil engineers. They were associated with surveys and construction in the Interior and on Vancouver Island, with the Coquitlam Water Works Company, and with New Westminster projects. In partnership with J.A. Kirk, Albert Hill was a partner in the engineering and surveying firm Hill & Kirk, located in New Westminster, B.C.

The fonds consists of miscellaneous personal papers and business correspondence of A. J. and A. E. Hill and other family members, 1821-1972. It includes maps, photographs, scrapbooks, printed materials, and books.

Immediate source of acquisition
The material was removed from the Hill family home (Dunwood) by Mr. And Mrs. Rotta of North Burnaby just before the home was demolished in 1974. The material was purchased from the Rottas by the Archives in 1974.
