Administrative history

Originally a chapter of the Delta Omega Sorority, the Comitas Club was formed in 1936 when its Vancouver members decided to break with the larger organization and found their own independent club. The name "Comitas", which means "good fellowship, refinement, good humour, good feeling", was chosen and a constitution was composed. Under the constitution, the aims and objects of the club are threefold: educational, philanthropic and social. In 1938, a Victoria chapter of the Comitas Club was formed and over the years the two groups have maintained a close association. A main thrust of philanthropic endeavor for the club has been its support of the Cerebral Palsy Centre, and later the Neurological Centre, through fundraising and other voluntary activities. Each chapter meets twice monthly with elections held annually in December. The Executive consists of President, Vice-President, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, Treasurer, Literary Director and Social Director. As well, appointments are made annually by the Executive to the positions of Social Service Convenor, Publicity Convenor, Sunshine Convenor, Literary Committee and Social Committee. Until 1971, the two chapters also convened a Presidents' Council, consisting of past presidents, presidents, and presidents-elect of each chapter, to be responsible for the general supervision, administration and expansion of the club.
