History
The Advisory Committee on Japanese Properties in Greater Vancouver was established in 1943 by the Custodian of Enemy Property, Norman A. McLarty, who was also Secretary of State for the federal government. The purpose of the Committee was to advise on matters relating to the disposal of private property owned by Japanese Canadians that was seized and forcibly sold by the Office of the Custodian of Enemy Property during the era of internment. Confiscated property included real estate, vehicles, fishing vessels, equipment, and household and personal belongings. The forced liquidation and sale of property resulted in mass dispossession and uprooting of the Japanese Canadian community. Members of the Committee were: Hon. Justice Sidney Smith, Chairman, Alderman Charles Jones, Mr. Kishizo Kimura, and Mr. A. E. McMaster. Mr. H. S. Durkee succeeded Mr. McMaster in May 1943. Mr. Kimura resigned in July 1943. The Committee was dissolved in June 1945.
