Administrative history
Charles Gardner Johnson (1857-1926), a Scottish mariner who arrived in Vancouver in 1885, opened the first shipping and insurance agency in the city in 1886. C. Gardner Johnson Limited operated as one of the city's major shipping agents for almost 100 years. In 1920, they became agents for the Johnson Line of Sweden. Following Johnson's death, the agency was bought by Johnson Line in 1938 and the shipowners continued to run the company until 1978.
