History

The Dr. Sun Yat Sen Garden Society was incorporated under the British Columbia's Society Act in 1981. The Society's mandate was to act as a cross-cultural bridge for greater understanding of the Chinese culture by establishing and operating a classical Chinese garden in Vancouver's Chinatown. Construction on the Garden began in 1984 and was completed just prior to the opening of Expo in 1986. The Society is governed by a Board of Trustees which appoints an executive director to manage the day-to-day operations of the garden. The Executive Director oversees the Administration, Gift Shop, Garden Operations, Public Programs, and Education departments. The Society also has several committees which deal with ad hoc issues or determine the policies and procedures for some of the Garden's operational departments. These committees report directly to the Board of Trustees.
