Biographical history

In 1924, in response to the need for a unified water system, an act passed by the provincial legislature resulted in the incorporation of the Greater Vancouver Water District. The District included the areas within the territorial limits of the city and the municipalities of Point Grey and South Vancouver, with provision for the addition of other municipalities. Necessary amendments were made to the Act at the 1925 session of the legislature and it was brought into effect by proclamation of the Lieutenant- Governor in 1926. The Water District functioned as a wholesaler of water, first purchasing its water supply system from the City, then supplying its member districts, such as cities and municipalities, at no profit. The work of the District was overseen by a Commissioner. In 1971, the Greater Vancouver Water District became a part of the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD). The GVRD supplies water at cost to member municipalities who, in their turn, distribute it locally and determine the rate they will charge consumers. For a more detailed history of the Greater Vancouver Water District, please consult the case file of the Greater Vancouver Regional District fonds.
