History

Prior to 1961, the electric power needs of British Columbia were supplied from a number of different sources. The largest privately owned utility was British Columbia Electric Company Limited. Another was a provincial crown corporation, British Columbia Power Commission, which had been created in 1945. In 1962, a new crown corporation was created, the British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority, by the amalgamation of the British Columbia Electric Company and the British Columbia Power Commission.
