History

The British Columbia Art League was incorporated in 1920, its first general meeting being held in 1921. The League was committed to the encouragement of art in Vancouver and to the acquisition of an art school and art gallery for the city. In 1921, arrangements were made with the B.C. Manufacturers' Association to stage exhibitions and to house collections which would form the nucleus of a permanent art gallery. In 1923 the Commercial Arts and Crafts School opened and in 1931 the Vancouver Art Gallery opened.
