History

Bell-Irving Insurance Agencies Ltd. began as the Insurance Department within the firm H. Bell-Irving & Co. in 1906. In 1920 the Insurance Department of H. Bell-Irving & Co. was spun off as a subsidiary private company, in the form of an agreement between the company and Andrew McCreight Creery, William Hobart Billings and James Wilson Mawson; this agreement resulted in the creation of Bell-Irving, Creery & Co. Ltd. (incorporated Oct. 15, 1920). At that time, the Insurance Department (and its retained profits for 1920 to that date) were sold to Bell-Irving, Creery & Co. in exchange for 9000 Preferred shares in the company at $10.

In 1930 the company name was changed to Bell-Irving Insurance Agencies Ltd. It’s not clear if the name change in 1930 resulted from changes in ownership, though from this point onwards the insurance agency’s financials were reported as part of those of H. Bell-Irving & Co., so the insurance agency may have been taken over as a subsidiary at that time.

Bell-Irving Insurance was a provider of property and maritime insurance; its principal clients were other companies in the Bell-Irving commercial sphere, including Anglo-British Columbia Packing Co. The company was also involved in real estate development and speculation. In 1972, Bell-Irving Insurance Agencies Ltd. merged with A.E. Lepage and the merged company operated under the A.E. Lepage name.
